On Sunday evening, the Mapping Festival proposed at Cinéma Spoutnik a screening of works by digital arts pioneers John & James Whitney, Peter Kubelka, Steina & Woody Vasulka – or how to give a wink to the ancestors of mapping, as it is today declined in many forms within the Geneva festival, one of the most important devoted to digital culture.

Over the course of ten days, 11’500 visitors and spectators were invited to discover installations, performances, movies, conferences and parties, scattered over a dozen venues of Geneva. For example, the ‘Onion Skin’ installation by Olivier Ratsi was unveiled at Pont-Rouge, the core of a future real estate complex in Acacias. The Bâtiment d’art contemporain hosted six installations on the theme of light, created by Benjamin Muzzin, Gabey Tjon Tham, A Normal Working Day, Christian Delécluse, Tundra and Matthijs Munnik. The Galpon des Péniches was the stage of successful performances, including those of Nonotak and Ryoichi Kurokawa. Finally, the Zoo of l’Usine offered three evenings for wise night-birds, which mingled DJs (Andy Stott, Gerd, Pearson Sound, 2562…) and visual artists (Pfadfinderei, Heleen Blanken, CHiKA, Mika Ventura…).

Regarding the traditional Mapping Festival rendezvous, the VJ Contest organized at the Spoutnik theatre was as usual full of supporters, coming to cheer candidates who competed live using personal or imposed visuals. The six workshops exploring artistic, practical and playful applications of mapping, for the second consecutive year focused on the first days of the festival, were sold out.

With an audience coming from Latin America, the United States, Japan, China, India, Europe, the Mapping Festival proves once again its international influence in the digital arts field.

The 11th edition will be held from 7 to 17 may 2015.

Mapping Festival has to unfortunately announce that the “Pont – Rouge Démolition Mapping” performance, created by the 1024 architecture collective in partnership with CFF Immobilier, and planned on Friday 23 and Saturday, May 24, cannot take place for traffic safety-related reasons.

However, we are pleased to announce a new event, which will take place on the same dates in impressive CFF halls located at 6, route des Jeunes; for the first time, this remarkable building located in the heart of Ports Francs will be open to the public. During the two evenings, the site will be open from 9pm to 1am; there, the ONION SKIN installation will be unveiled at 10pm.

ONION SKIN is an installation by Olivier Ratsi, a French artist who was among the guests of the very first Mapping Festival in 2005. He’s co-founder of the Antivj ‘visual label’ specialized in audiovisual projections, architectural performance and light installations. ONION SKIN is a graphical work about the re-composition of time and space through a game of perspectives, both of the exhibition space itself and that of the projection canvas. Built around a progressive structure, made up of 4 parts lasting 14 minutes in total, the piece plays on the principle of repetition and scale to create a physical and hypnotic experience that opens doors onto the hidden and untouchable.

ONION SKIN has been shown at several prestigious festivals around the world (Mexico, Paris, Rio de Janeiro), and is shown here for the first time in Switzerland.

Each evening, bars and food truck will offer snacks and drinks.
On May 23, the musical mood of the evening will be provided by Opuswerk, and festivities will continue at 11pm in Motel Campo.
On May 24, Eric A L’aniz will provide the mix.

Join us at Maison Tavel on May 17, 2014 (starting at 6pm), for the opening aperitif of Distortions, an installation by Pierre-Laurent Cassière.

That same evening from 10pm to 1am, during the Nuit des musées at Musée d’art et d’histoire, you will discover Cyclique, an installation by Maxime Houot & Nohista – Collectif Coin.

In association with Musées d’art et d’histoire and Maison Tavel.

Pierre-Laurent Cassière (b. 1982) is a french artist whose practice is mainly influenced by media archaeology. Through kinetic sculpture, expanded cinema and sound installation, his audiovisual artworks often combine historical techniques with contemporary technologies to propose contemplative apparatuses that confront us with our perceptive habits.

Three dark mirrors suspended from solid oak gallows deform the image of bodies and space according to their oscillations. The steel sheets adopt numerous vibratory states: from gentle, almost liquid undulations, to noisy convulsions, which fragment, blur, and multiply reflections.

MAXIME HOUOT & NOHISTA (COLLECTIF COIN) (FR) – Cyclique
Musée d’art et histoire (inner courtyard) - Free entrance with Nuit des musées pass
22h – 01h

In association with Musée d’art et d’histoire.

The Coin collective, an artistic laboratory based in Grenoble (France), produces installations and monumental performances. For each new project its artistic director, Maxime Houot, assembles a new collective depending on needs, wanted know-how, collaboration wishes.
Bruno Ribeiro, aka Nohista, is an audio-visual artist. Considering hearing and sight to be a single and indivisible sense, he plays images like a musical instrument, through which sound becomes tangible. In his creations, he works on the themes of perception and illusion, creating immersive and sensitive performances for the audience.

Cyclique is a work in situ, standing between digital minimalism and monumental kinetic installation. Inflated with helium and equipped with LEDS, 256 balloons form a matrix of luminous spheres above the ground. Its structure constantly changes, balloons moving at the discretion of air currents, immersing the audience in a synesthetic landscape where the sound becomes conductor.

CinéGlobe is an international short film festival that takes place every two years at CERN, in the Science and Innovation Globe. Now in its fourth edition, it is quickly becoming one of the most important event in the world mixing science and technology.

The Mapping Festival is happy to collaborate with CinéGlobe. On March 21st, we will disclose a selection of short films produced during our previous editions, panoramas of performances among the most memorable and portraits of iconic artists of the genre.

At the end of the screening, the CENC collective will present Disorder, a performance similar to the multidisciplinary proposals initiated and supported by the festival, weaving the worlds of dance, sound and generative video.

The public will also discover during the evening a LED installation, especially built for the occasion by Boris Edelstein, which will adorn the corridors of the globe.
